Volunteer firefighters from Haumoana in Hawke's Bay are being praised for their "quick and professional work" which stopped a fire from spreading to the main buildings of luxury lodge The Farm at Cape Kidnappers on Thursday night.

Newshub has been told the fire began near a building used for laundry services and while local fire crews called for back-up from Napier and Hastings, they managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to any of the other historic buildings on site.

The 6000 hectare property is owned by the Robertson family and family spokesperson Jay Robertson told Newshub they were relieved that the fire was contained, controlled and extinguished, thanking all fire crews that attended.

"It is great to know that Hawke's Bay is so well serviced and we are thankful for their swift action to ensure the fire was safely extinguished," Robertson said.
