Wellington Airport reopens after smoke forced evacuation

Wellington Airport has reopened after smoke in the main terminal forced an evacuation.

A dodgy light fitting is being blamed for the disruption.

A spokesperson for the airport told Newshub smoke was detected at 8:30am - by 9:40am travellers were allowed back in the building after Fire and Emergency attended the scene.

Queues formed at flight check-ins as hundreds of people flooded back into the airport.

Some flights have been delayed as a result of the fire. A flight due to depart to Auckland at 9am has now been pushed back until 1:30pm.

Wellington Airport recommends anyone intending to catch a flight check the live flight information to see if their travel has been impacted.
