Booking a domestic NZ flight on a Sunday can save you 25 percent on the airfare - study

New data has found New Zealanders can save up to 25 percent on a domestic airfare simply by reserving it on a Sunday instead of a Friday.

The research, conducted by booking website Expedia, examined what Kiwis paid for travel between January and October in both 2019 and 2020.

Booking an international flight on a Sunday rather than a Friday can save almost 15 percent, the study found.

It also identified the cheapest days of the week to depart. The data shows starting a domestic holiday on a Thursday can save almost 20 percent compared to a Sunday, while departing on an international trip on a Tuesday or Thursday can also save nearly 20 percent compared to a Sunday.

Expedia has also released a list of the 2021 destinations New Zealanders have searched travel deals for most this year.

As it has with several trending destination lists this year, Queenstown has come out on top in a top 10 dominated by domestic regions along with just two international destinations: Fiji and the Cook Islands.

Expedia's most searched 2021 destinations by Kiwis:

  1. Queenstown
  2. Auckland
  3. Bay of Plenty
  4. Fiji
  5. Cook Islands
  6. Nelson
  7. Taupo
  8. Wellington
  9. Canterbury
  10. Waikato

While the COVID-19 pandemic decimated international travel in 2020, there is hope for safe travel bubbles opening next year.
