Expedia's most popular New Zealand summer hot spots revealed

New Zealanders are ready to turn their backs on the difficulties of 2020 and end the year with a summer holiday, according to survey results released to Newshub from booking website Expedia.

A survey by the company of 500 people in Aotearoa revealed that 76 percent of them had already booked, or are planning to book a holiday this summer.

Kiwis are natural travellers and the COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t stopped us, with many opting to explore their backyard over the last six months. However, as restrictions ease and New Zealand enters a 'new normal', 24 percent of those surveyed said they are planning to explore outside their region or visit multiple destinations this summer.

Destination spotlight – where’s trending this summer:

Survey results show 33 percent of Kiwis are wanting to explore island or beach escapes this summer, with destinations such as Bay of Plenty, Nelson and Bay of Islands making the list of most searched destinations.

Top trending destinations for the summer holidays compared to last year:

  • Queenstown (120 percent increase)
  • Canterbury (almost 90 percent increase)
  • Wanaka (almost 85 percent increase)
  • Nelson (almost 65 percent increase)
  • Bay of Island (almost 30 percent increase)
  • Bay of Plenty (almost 30 percent increase)

Almost half - 46 percent - are planning to holiday with their immediate family and 21 percent with their friends.
