Amazing video of Richie McCaw's first skydive shows off Mount Maunganui's beauty

Celebrity couple Richie and Gemma McCaw are helping Tourism New Zealand promote its current 'Do Something New' campaign by taking it to new heights.

On Wednesday morning, Richie took it upon himself to do something new to him: jumping out of a plane over Gemma's hometown of Mount Maunganui.

McCaw may have done many things in his time, but the morning jump was the former All Black's first ever skydive.

"While 2020 has been a year for the books, Gemma and I have loved getting out and exploring the country – we've seen first-hand how much it means to tourism operators to have people through the doors," Richie said.

Video taken during the jump shows off the stunning scenery of Tauranga and Mount Maunganui, from the long coastline to the harbour and mountains in the distance.

Rene de Monchy, Tourism NZ Director Commercial, said McCaw's leap of faith from 15,000 feet was a great example of Kiwis doing something new.

"Domestic tourism is vital to New Zealand's recovery and we are working hard to encourage New Zealanders to do something new," said de Monchy.

"Despite New Zealanders doing a fantastic job getting out and about supporting New Zealand's recovery by spending across the country there is an expected $12.9 billion dollar gap from the lack of international visitors."
