Auckland Airport staff are dealing with a massive backlog of passengers after what is being described as a 'security incident' brought all processing to a halt on Thursday afternoon.

A passenger who had just arrived in Auckland said information was being given over the PA system advising travellers of delays due to the incident.

Police told Newshub they were unaware of any incidents and Air New Zealand referred any questions to Aviation Security Service (Avsec).

"We understand it was an airport company door that a person went through the wrong way," Avsec told Newshub.

"CCTV footage identified the passenger and the person was found. They didn't interact with anyone so it's all back and running as normal."

Photos sent to Newshub appear to show that processing of passengers resumed around 4pm, but there were substantial queues in the domestic terminal as people waited to pass through security.
