Huntly locals are sharing stunning photos from the area to social media, telling those who dismiss the town to "take a second look".

The Waikato town has long been the butt of jokes and it even won the title of New Zealand's 'Shit Town' for 2019.

The public vote was conducted in December 2019 with Kiwis asked to pick the worst town between finalists Porirua and Huntly.

But over the weekend locals took to the Facebook page "Huntly's Community page" to spread photos of their favourite spots in the area.

"Whoever disses Huntly - take a second look," the thread said.

Images have been shared of the sun setting over hills of paddocks and morning sunrise walks over the Tainui Bridge.

Others look out over the Waikato River and Hakanoa Lake.

"Huntly is beautiful. Mock us all they want, [you] never hear of COVID cases here," one person wrote.

"Hakanoa lake is the best to go have lunch under the sunset," another said.

"Huntly's the best, who cares what people say."

One commenter wrote that there is "nothing better than the view from our backyards".
