Air New Zealand is making a move on the frequent flyers of rival airlines Qantas and Virgin Australia, offering to match the status they hold on those airline's rewards programme with the equivalent on its Airpoints.

Customers who hold Gold status or higher at Qantas, Virgin Australia and other eligible airlines, and who are based in Australia or New Zealand, can apply for the Touch of Gold offer which would give them instant Gold status with Air NZ and all the perks that comes with it.

Benefits include lounge access, seat upgrades, priority check-in and boarding, priority baggage and additional baggage allowances.

Air NZ General Manager of Loyalty Kate O'Brien says it's time to roll out the "gold carpet" for loyal customers of rival airlines.

"We know there is pent up demand for trans-Tasman travel and it's the perfect time for customers to get a taste of our world-class customer experience and reap the benefits of our Airpoints programme," she says.

"We have lounges across Aotearoa and Australia that our Gold Airpoints members can relax in before a flight."

Full details of how to apply can be found on the airline's website.
