It's estimated around 400,000 Kiwis have had their passports expire in the time between the closing of New Zealand's borders due to COVID-19 and now.

On top of that, there are likely to be thousands of people who - if asked on the spot - probably couldn't locate their passport should they need to in a hurry.

Now a new survey from Booking.com claims 61 percent of Kiwi travellers have admitted they look nothing like their passport photos after spending a good part of the last year under lockdown.

Of those, 26 percent of those who took part in the survey said their look had changed due to gaining lockdown kilos or cutting their locks post-lockdown, with 17 percent saying their look had changed because they had let their hair out and grown it longer during the pandemic.

If your passport has expired, or you think it's really time to update your image, then it's pretty fast and easy to do so.

Your passport's expiry date is displayed on the photo page inside the front of your passport.

Remember that if you are planning to travel and your passport is due to expire in less than a year, some countries require it has at least six months validity remaining after your intended departure date from that country.
