The worst airlines in the world have been named in research undertaken by Bounce, a global luggage storage company.

Fortunately for Kiwis, Air New Zealand is nowhere near the bottom.

Airlines were ranked using the following factors: Punctuality, maximum free baggage allowance, staff service, meals, inflight entertainment, seat comfort and the number of complaints received.

The world's worst airlines:

Viva Air Colombia 3.4/10

According to Bounce, Viva has carried 22.55 million passengers in the last seven years and operates around 40,000 flights a year. The low-cost carrier scores one out of five in the index for meals, seat comfort and inflight entertainment as few amenities are offered to customers free of charge. However, it did receive a low number of complaints.

Based at Monterrey International Airport in Mexico, this budget airline carries passengers internally as well to and from cities in the US. It scores one out of five in the index for both inflight entertainment and meals and two out of five for staff service. This could be due to its buy-on-board programme where food and drink can only be purchased.

Volaris Airlines 4/10

This low-cost airline is also based in Mexico City and is one of the few airlines expected to make a profit in 2021 despite the impact of COVID-19, due to its focus on leisure as well as visiting friends and relatives.

However, due to the airline discontinuing inflight entertainment in 2019, it has one of the lowest scores in this survey. Its low maximum baggage weight allowance of 10 kg also helped it rank as the third worst airline.

More well-known airlines also made the list of worst airlines including Ryanair, which scored  4.2/10, mainly due to having no free baggage allowance and no inflight entertainment.

EasyJet scored 5.2/10, with seat comfort and meal options giving it a slight edge over rival Ryanair.

The most complained about airline was TAP, with a total of 1530 complaints in the year to June 2021, compared to 19 for Air New Zealand.

The maximum free baggage allowance fund in the survey was 32kg, offered by La Compagnie, Wantas, Air Canada and Air Europa.

The survey also revealed the world's best airlines according to the same criteria with ANA, Singapore Airlines and Korean Airlines leading the way. Qantas placed 12th and Air New Zealand 13th best airline in the world.
