US woman isolates in Icelandair plane bathroom for five hours after testing positive on flight

A US woman who tested positive for COVID-19 while on a flight to Iceland has been praised for voluntarily self-isolating in the plane's bathroom for five hours.

Marisa Fotieo, from Michigan, took the test while onboard the Chicago-Reykjavik Icelandair flight when her throat suddenly started to hurt.

When she got the positive result, she decided it would be safer for fellow passengers if she isolated in the bathroom.

"I just took my rapid test and I brought it into the bathroom, and within what felt like two seconds there were two lines [indicating a positive test]," Fotieo told NBC.

"There's 150 people on the flight, and my biggest fear was giving it to them," she said.

Fotieo documented her "crazy experience" on TikTok in a video that has been viewed millions of times.

"Shout out to @Icelandair for my VIP quarantine quarters," she wrote on the video.

Fotieo thanked Icelandair flight attendant Ragnhildur "Rocky" Eiríksdóttir for helping make her toilet-stay relatively comfortable.

"She made sure I had everything I needed for the next five hours from food to drinks and constantly checked on me, assuring me I would be all right," she told NBC.

Fotieo had to isolate again on arrival in Iceland. She said the flight attendant stayed in touch to make sure she was safe and sent her flowers and a small Christmas tree with lights.

"It was so heartfelt, and she's just an angel," she said.
