Several flights in and out of Auckland have been cancelled or delayed on Friday as New Zealanders gear up for the busy Christmas travel season.

Air New Zealand said two of its domestic flights from Auckland to Tauranga were cancelled and others to New Plymouth and Kerikeri were delayed.

Other routes affected were incoming flights from Whangārei, Queenstown and two from Tauranga - all cancelled.

There were also delays to services arriving in the City of Sails from Gisborne, Blenheim, New Plymouth, Napier and Christchurch.

Auckland was blanketed by fog on Friday morning but it is unclear if the disruptions were weather-related.

Air New Zealand previously warned travellers to be extra prepared for the Christmas holiday travel period. The national carrier said it was flying 2.8 million travellers across the country this summer, increasing the likelihood of long waits for check-in and security as well as the possibility of flight delays.

Fifty-thousand customers were expected to fly between December 15 and 28 alone, Air New Zealand said.
