Air New Zealand operates first flight entirely in te reo Māori ahead of Te Matatini

Air New Zealand / Araraurangi Aotearoa has operated its first flight conducted entirely in te reo Māori.

On board were performers heading to Te Matatini, the national kapa haka festival in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Jahmaine Manawaroa Cummings-Hodge from Air New Zealand said the purpose of the flight was to come together with Te Matatini.

"Both of us have a strong passion for te reo Māori," he said.

"How can we use the platforms that we have to normalise te reo Māori and also to celebrate some of our people at Air New Zealand who have a passion for te reo Māori and share that language with our whānau who are travelling up for Te Matatini."

Aside from Civil Aviation Authority-prescribed announcements, the only language spoken by pilots and cabin crew was te reo Māori.

The historic moment was celebrated onboard the flight with waiata.

Te Matatini begins on Wednesday and finishes on Saturday.
