Tourism Fiji campaign hopes to 'cheer up' people in their 40s - the 'most depressing' age

After research found people tend to be unhappiest in their 40s and that 47 may be the "most depressing" point in one's life, Tourism Fiji has launched a campaign to "cheer up" those in the supposedly dreaded age demographic.

The 40-Something Getaway campaign is promoting a series of holiday experiences in Fiji designed to maximise happiness for people in their 40s.

The research referenced by the campaign was published in the US National Library of Medicine in 2020. It found that happiness declines and bottoms out in our 40s before slowly hiking upwards again in the mid-50s.

But the Tourism Fiji campaign believes a holiday to the Pacific Island will help boost happiness levels, with offerings like "gentle strolls along white sandy beaches to replenish your soul" and "endless opportunities to immerse yourself in the local Fijian culture".

Television personality Jaquie Brown just happens to be 47 herself.

"Your 40s are meant to be a time when you have it all together, but it's not always easy to feel fantastic when you are overloaded with family responsibility, a stressful job and are exposed to a constant worrying news cycle," said Brown, who appears in the campaign.

"As you run around trying to do all the things for all the people it's easy to lose your sense of self, which makes prioritising personal happiness more important than ever.

"That is why I am thrilled to be working with Tourism Fiji to showcase their 40 Something Getaway, where you can reclaim your calm, one massage, one peaceful early morning swim, and one drink with a tiny umbrella in it, at a time."

Tourism Fiji's top five recommendations for a 40-Something Getaway:

  • Get the mood going with a child-free night of candle-lit romance at the private dining pier at Musket Cove Island Resort & Marina
  • Get the blood pumping with a physical experience such as snorkelling amongst coral reefs in the Mamanuca Islands
  • Take the time to try something that you've never contemplated before, such as swimming with giant Manta Rays in the Yasawa Islands
  • Nothing fills the human cup more than when we are immersed in nature. Take part in some of the sustainability programmes, such as coral or mangrove planting at the Shangri-La Yanuca Island on the Coral Coast
  • Enjoy relaxing (and affordable) activities such as complimentary morning yoga sessions, or feel like a million dollars after a relaxing authentic spa treatment.
