One year ago today, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 left Amsterdam for Kuala Lumpur, with 283 passengers and 15 crew members onboard.

The Boeing 777 never arrived in Malaysia however, being shot from the sky while flying over warn-torn Ukraine.

The plane crashed in a region controlled by rebel forces, meaning the recovery effort was fraught with difficulties and the investigation into the exact cause was chaotic.

Many blamed Russia for being behind the attack, while President Vladimir Putin pointed the finger at Ukrainian forces.

The investigation into the exact cause of the crash is being led by the Netherlands – which lost 193 lives in the incident – and is expected to be released in October.
