High Court to rule on bridge as a sport

There's little doubt that bridge is a mentally challenging game – but now a British High Court judge is to rule on whether it should officially be classed as a sport.

Justice Dove will hear arguments about the issue over the next two days at a hearing in London.

Union officials say having bridge classed as a sport will benefit the game as it will be eligible for many grants and competitions exempt from VAT (GST) payment.

The case came about after Sport England refused to recognise the card game as a sport.

According to the English Bridge Union, the game has the definition of sport in the 2011 Charities Act on its side which says activities that "promote health involving physical or mental skill or exertion".
