Bosses at an Italian restaurant in Auckland are going a long way to show employees how much they value them – through a staff trip to Italy.

Coco's Cantina on Auckland's Karangahape Rd is closing its doors for two weeks so staff can learn first-hand about Italian culture and cuisine.

Restaurant owner Renee Coulter says they wanted to do something fun for staff.

"[We've] got some staff who've had to get a passport to come – never been on a plane before, never been anywhere."

It wasn't handed to them on a plate. While Coco's chipped in for insurance and accommodation, staff still had to come up with the rest through learning to budget, saving tips and the odd bit of fundraising.
