Don't get naked for anyone on Skype – that's the message police are urging following reports of blackmail attempts via the video calling app.

Six men have come forward to Counties Manukau police over the last month after carrying out "intimate activities" over Skype with people from overseas they had never met.

Police say footage of the men was recorded by those on the other end of the video call and used to "extort" the men for money.

Detective Senior Sergeant Eddie Sutherland says people need to take care when talking to people they don't know online.

"Keep personal information private, don't respond to messages from people you don't know and don't post revealing pictures of yourself online," he warns.

Police advise anyone who finds themselves in a situation like this to report it.
