It could have been a scene from a Cold War movie – two convicted spies being handed back to the countries they work for.

One of them was Eston Kohver who has been serving 15 years of hard labour for spying for Estonia.

The other was Alexei Dressen, serving 16 years for treason and divulging state secrets to Russia.

The high-security rendezvous was filmed and organised at a remote border post.

Signed papers exchanged on a bridge over the Piusa River, linking Russia and Estonia, sealed the deal.

"I'm very happy to be back in my homeland," says Kohver. "I would like to thank all those to whom my welfare was important, everyone who supported me."
