US mother leaves children to live in cave

A 24-year-old US mother is in custody after her two children were found barefoot and without water living in a wooden crate in an underground cave.

Brittany Mugrauer was charged on Friday night (local time) with two counts of felony child endangerment, the Associated Press reports.

Jackson County detectives found her four- and six-year-old children in the three-metre crate in Kansas City, Missouri on Thursday.

The children, who were dirty and had no shoes, had been living in the cave for several days, AP reports.

Investigators went to the cave with a search warrant in relation to a stolen car operation when they found the children. They say the children did not appear frightened.

The children were taken to Children's Mercy Hospital where they were evaluated, bathed and given clean clothes.

Mugrauer told the investigators her children had been living in the cave for several days.

She was taken into custody Friday afternoon and has not yet appeared in court.
