A BBC wildlife show presenter brought an interview to a halt when a blue whale was spotted nearby.

The mammal was seen on the Big Blue Live helicopter camera while Steve Backshall was interviewing whale expert Doris Welch in Moss Landing, California.

"I'm so, so sorry, I don't believe what I've just heard," he interrupts. "We have on our helicopter a blue whale. It is to the south of us, absolutely clearly on the surface.

"The largest animal ever known to have lived on our planet… This is one of the most extraordinary things I have ever seen."

Blue whales, which can live up to 90 years in the wild, are an endangered species.
