Quake strikes western Brazil

A large but very deep 6.4 magnitude earthquake has hit western Brazil, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake struck at 4:45pm (AEDT) at a depth of 604 kilometres.

It occurred some 130km southwest of the town of Tarauaca and 700km northeast of Lima, Peru.
