The Australian surfer attacked by a shark earlier this year is on the verge of a remarkable comeback.

Mick Fanning knows he's lucky to be alive, now he's a top contender for the world title.

Fanning stood hand in hand in honour of the late surfing champion Andy Irons as part of the Hawaiian Pipe Masters’ annual tribute. Irons died in 2010 of a heart attack, and Fanning knows all too well it could've been him the surfing community paid tribute too.

"For me it's been a wild year, so might as well keep the wild rides going," he says.

But he says he still has trouble coming to grips with almost being killed while competing at J Bay in South Africa.
