Man dies in German condom machine explosion

A man in Germany has died after an apparent attempt to blow up a condom vending machine.

The 29-year-old was taken to hospital on Christmas Day with a head injury by two other men who first told staff he'd fallen down some stairs, Sky News reports.

But doctors were suspicious of their story and decided to call police.

The trio later admitted to trying to explode the machine in the town of Shoeppingen near the Netherlands border and the injured man wasn't fast enough to avoid the shrapnel from the blast.

Police say the men got into a car after preparing the explosives, but the victim failed to close his door and got hit by debris.

They found untouched condom packets and money lying on the ground at the scene of the explosion.

The apparent motive of the group remains unclear.
