Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has performed a good Christmas deed – by using his rhetoric skills to talk down a man from jumping off a bridge in Istanbul.

According to The Telegraph, the man was apparently preparing to jump when the Turkish president's motorcade was passing over the Bosphorus Bridge, which links Europe with Asia, after Friday prayers.

Local news footage showed Mr Erdogan's bodyguards bringing the sobbing man and after talking with the president, the man can be seen kissing Mr Erdogan's hand, an act of respect in Turkish culture.

Police had been trying for almost two hours to talk the man out of killing himself after he abandoned his car on the bridge and climbed over the side railing, The Telegraph reports.
