New South Wales police have arrested a 17-year-old for threats made on social media which caused an evacuation of the Sydney Opera House last week.

Police say a threat was received via social media just before 11am on January 14 which resulted in officers from the Sydney City Local Area Command being notified.

The Opera House was then evacuated and the surrounding area searched.

Police also attended Manly ferry wharf after receiving information those responsible for the threats may have been on a ferry.

Searches were called off when nothing of interest was located.

Police arrested the teenage boy yesterday and he was charged with false representation resulting in a police investigation.

He is due to appear in a children's court on February 23.
