The BBC says the motive for an attack which brought down its website for hours is still unclear.

The broadcaster's site went offline following what's known as a "distributed denial of service" and meant those trying to access it were met with an error message.

It has earlier tweeted the problem was because of a "technical issue" and saying the corporation was aware of ongoing access issues and was working to fix it.

However, around midday on Thursday (local time) had released another statement saying the website was back up and running.
