Indian police have salvaged a gold chain a thief stole, and then swallowed after being caught, by using a rather unorthodox method – force feeding him 40 bananas.

The Hindustan Times reported the man denied snatching the chain from a woman in a Mumbai street and swallowed it in an effort to cover up his tracks last week.

However, hospital X-rays showed the jewellery was indeed there.

An enema was ordered but did not produce the desired effect so doctors suggested performing an operation, but police decided that would be too costly and opted for the bananas.

"He was fed more than 40 bananas throughout the day,” said Senior Inspector Shankar Dhanavade of the Mumbai police. "Eventually the chain was found. We made him wash and disinfect it."

The 25-year-old man appeared in court on Friday and is in police custody, said Snr Insp Dhanavade.

This is not the first time Mumbai police have used this technique in order to recover a stolen item.

According to the paper, in July last year, a chain was retrieved after a thief was made to eat two-dozen bananas and drink several litres of milk laced with laxatives. And in April, a thief was fed five-dozen bananas after swallowing a gold chain with a large pendant.
