At least one person is dead as Fiji is hit by what’s been described as the most powerful storm ever recorded in the southern hemisphere.

There are reports an elderly man has died on Koro Island, north-east of Suva, as Cyclone Winston lashes the island nation with winds of up to 230km/h and gusts of up to 325km/h.

The government declared a nationwide curfew and a state of emergency in anticipation of the powerful Category 5 storm. International airlines have stopped flights to Fiji.

Last week Cyclone Winston hit Tonga but since then it has become more powerful.

Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has told Fijians that they "cannot afford to be complacent".
