An investigation has been launched after "hardcore pornography" played in place of a tribute video at a funeral for a father and son killed in a car crash.

33-year-old Simon Lewis and his baby son died in Cardiff on New Year's Eve after a head-on crash with a disqualified driver, according to the BBC.

However the tragedy was compounded further at the funeral, with porn appearing on a screen in front of funeral attendees instead of the tribute to Mr Lewis that had been planned.

Cardiff Council, who own the crematorium that hosted the funeral, are now urgently investigating the incident -- but one attendee says the "disgusting" video has already caused a lot of damage.

"Everyone was in shock. Simon's father-in-law was furious -- he shouted at the staff present and told them to turn it off," the funeral-goer said.

"It took them nearly four minutes to turn it off -- people couldn't believe what they were seeing."

However Reverend Lionel Fanthorpe, who was in charge of the funeral, said the video was off within a few seconds.

"I'm either looking at the congregation or at the prayer book. To me, it sounded something like voices in a shopping centre but I couldn't see," he explained.

"Simon's father-in-law was desperately upset. [He] came rushing forward. He was looking for an engineer and urging them to 'turn it off, turn it off'. Fortunately it was off in seconds.

"This was not what anybody could have ever imagined or wanted. I just felt the deepest possible sympathy."

While the investigation is still being carried out, a spokesperson for Cardiff Council said the incident may have been caused by an interference with its wifi or Bluetooth network.

"The other three screens which aren't smart TVs were unaffected. We are clear that it isn't possible for any member of staff to play or download anything on the computer that links to the screens in the chapel," she said.

The funeral directors and council have apologised for the incident.
