A critically endangered tortoise has miraculously made its way home after it was taken from its enclosure at Perth Zoo and sold on the black market.

The radiated tortoise was stolen last Tuesday and was placed on the illegal pet trade market, sparking fears about its treatment -- especially as it is a member of a species edging perilously close to extinction.

However, the man who shelled out for the 10-year-old tortoise handed it in to police when it became clear to him how rare the species was.

Police have described the man as a "good Samaritan", as he essentially forfeited the money spent to purchase the reptile.

The tortoise, which has not yet been named, is being treated by vets and quarantined before being returned to Perth Zoo.
