Newshub reporter Michael Morrah has just returned yesterday from Nuku'lofa where Tonga's armed forces have been called in to help the fight against the spread of the Zika virus.

Tongan health authorities are urging residents to be careful with household rubbish, amid fears it's contributing to a growing number of mosquito breeding sites.

So far seven people had been confirmed with the virus, and there were a further 542 suspected cases.

Three of the suspected cases are pregnant women.

Foreign minister Murray McCully said officials were investigating how New Zealand could best assist.
