A Sydney schoolgirl accused of trying to send thousands of dollars to the Islamic State (IS) has been refused bail.

It's alleged the 16-year-old told police she was following orders from notorious IS fighter Ahmed Merhi, and was in the process of wiring him thousands of dollars.

The schoolgirl's lawyer argued she should be released on bail because she's about to sit her exams.

The girl, who can't be named, was arrested on Tuesday when counter-terrorism investigators swooped on her Guildford home.
