Ex-IS member 'wasn't thinking straight'

Mohammed Jamal Khweis (File)

An American who joined the Islamic State has spoken about the moment he realised he'd made a mistake.

Mohammed Jamal Khweis says he joined the group in December, but surrendered in Northern Iraq this week.

"At the time I made a decision to go 'cause I wasn't thinking straight," he said.

"I didn't see myself living in that environment -- I wanted to go back to America."

It's not yet clear when he will return to the US, but the Justice Department is likely to file charges against him.
