Actor and director George Clooney has responded to protesters against a fundraiser he and his wife Amal held on Hilary Clinton's behalf that cost up to US$353,400 (NZ$512,099) per couple.

Clooney is a supporter of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, and told NBC News a day after the fundraiser that he agrees an "obscene" amount of money was involved.

"We had some protesters last night when we pulled up in San Francisco and they're right to protest. They're absolutely right. It is an obscene amount of money," Clooney said in excerpts from the interview released on Saturday (local time).

US Senator Bernie Sanders, and Clinton's major Democratic competition, has slammed Clinton over the pricey event, and for accepting large sums of money for her campaign, according to Reuters.

"The Sanders campaign when they talk about it is absolutely right. It's ridiculous that we should have this kind of money in politics. I agree completely," says Clooney.

In response to the dinner, the Sanders campaign sent an email to supporters asking them to help reach their fundraising goals by chipping in $3.53 apiece instead, Reuters reports.
