The mother of the first hostage killed by Islamic State has responded to the terrorist group's latest message about her son.

"Great, captured on Thanksgiving day, killed on my mom's birthday," are reportedly the last words spoken by James Foley as he was led out to his death, according to the group's propaganda magazine Dabiq.

Mr Foley was the first American to be executed by ISIS, in August 2014.

Images of him, shaven-headed, in the desert next to his executioner shook the world.

The revelations are attributed to British IS hostage James Cantlie, who wrote in the latest issue about the harrowing final moments before Mr Foley's beheading.

In an interview with Newshub this morning Diane Foley said she found out this morning via email from the FBI.

"It's always very troubling and frightening. ISIS wants to continue to terrorise us. They have such hatred for us," Mrs Foley said.

She is in New Zealand to speak at a Catholic event, on the subject of forgiveness because she says she has forgiven ISIS.
