NASA has released footage of the Aurora lights, viewed from outside of Earth's atmosphere.

Taken from the International Space Station, it shows both the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis in ultra-high definition.

The phenomenon of Aurora occurs when charged particles from the sun strike atoms in the Earth's atmosphere, causing the electrons to move to a higher energy state. Then, when the atoms drop back to a lower energy state they release light.
