A Somali refugee is in hospital in critical condition after setting herself on fire on Nauru.

The Refugee Action Coalition (RAC) says the woman was in Brisbane last week before she was taken back to the offshore processing centre.

It follows the death of an Iranian man in a Brisbane hospital last week after he also set himself on fire.

Australia's Department of Immigration and Border Protection says it is aware of the incident and is "working with the government of Nauru to identify appropriate medical treatment options".

The RAC has slammed Australia's immigration policies following the incident.

"This is another self-harm attempt that is [Australian Immigration Minister] Peter Dutton's responsibility," says RAC spokesman Ian Rintoul.

"A vulnerable young woman who needed protection was a victim of a spiteful removal. She has been sent to the toxic environment that the minister has created on Nauru. Tragically this was entirely predictable."
