After years of study, it's the pinnacle of celebrating student life: the chance to let loose on graduation day by throwing mortar boards in the air.

However for some, it seems the risks are just too great.

The University of East Anglia in Norwich has banned all students from throwing their hats at this year's graduation ceremonies.

In a statement a spokesperson said "the decision follows a number of injuries over recent years to graduates hurt by falling mortarboards."

"This is an unacceptable risk and we want to ensure no student's graduation day is ruined by the potential for avoidable injury."

Photographers are offering to Photoshop the hats onto pictures instead, while students mime the throwing action. But for many that just isn't the same -- and the apparent "risk" is worth it.
