Obama to be first sitting president visiting Hiroshima

United States President Barack Obama is to make an historic visit to Hiroshima at the end of May, the White House has confirmed.

He'll be the first President to visit the city where the US dropped an atomic bomb in 1945, and will travel there later this month with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The White House has denied accusations it is an 'apology tour', saying there won't be an apology for the bombings.

"The President will make an historic visit to Hiroshima with Prime Minister [Shinzo] Abe to highlight his continued commitment to pursuing peace and security in a world without nuclear weapons," Mr Obama's press secretary said in a statement.
