At the age of just 19, film studies student Terence Smith has become the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom.

Mr Smith was voted by his fellow councillors to lead the town of Goole, in northeast England, for 12 months, after serving as deputy Mayor since last year.

The Labour supporter says championing young people's issues will be his main priority over his next four years on council.

He tweeted a photo of himself wearing the mayoral chains, saying "Proud to be elected Mayor of Goole! Making me Britain's Youngest Mayor in the country! #Proud"

Mr Smith was congratulated on twitter by Labour Party deputy leader Tom Watson.

"Well done to my pal @TerenceSmith14 - the youngest mayor in the world (probably)," posted Mr Watson.

Looking to the future, Mr Smith is considering a career in politics, either at a national or local level.

He is currently studying film studies at York College.

The Goole council represents just over 18,500 people in Yorkshire County.
