Nearly two decades after the infamous unsolved murder of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, a former prime suspect in the case is behind bars, charged with the sexual exploitation of a child.

Gary Howard Oliva, 52, was arrested in Colorado after authorities say he uploaded more than 20 graphic photos of children to a Gmail account.

Several of the images showed a girl between the age of 4 and 6 engaging in sexual acts with an adult male, the affidavit claims.

Six-year-old JonBenet was found bludgeoned to death on December 25, 1996, in the basement of her Boulder home.

At the time of her death, Oliva was spotted in the area a number of times and told a newspaper that the murder "touched him very deeply". He was also found to be in possession of a stun gun used in JonBenet's murder.

Oliva was not formally cleared of the murder, although no DNA evidence points to him.

Despite the many suspects in the murder of JonBenet and a number of individuals claiming to have killed her, no charges have ever been laid.

With the 20th anniversary approaching, numerous investigations are underway by media organisations and the Boulder Police Department says the case is active and open.

Oliva was reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children by Google over the obscene images, which were later forwarded to the Internet Crimes Against Children task force.

He registered as a sex offender in Colorado on June 1 and is being held at the Boulder County Jail on $US10,000 bail.
