Thousands of crabs migrate to Melbourne

Spectacular footage has been captured of thousands of giant spider crabs gathering off the coast of Melbourne.

Every year the crustaceans migrate to the cooler shallow waters of Port Phillip Bay off Blairgowrie to moult.

It's believed the giant crabs gather in large numbers for protection as they shed their hard outer shell, making them vulnerable to predators like stingrays.

The footage was taken by marine scientist and diver Sheree Marris.
