US engineers use quake machine to test building strength

Earthquake engineers at the University of California in San Diego have used the world's largest shake table to make a 6.7 magnitude earthquake underneath a six-story building.

The building took a week to make, and will help them understand how tall, steel-frame structures can withstand earthquakes and the fires that may follow.

The construction industry is interested in these buildings, because they are cheaper and offer more protection than wooden-frame construction methods.
