Shocking video has emerged that appears to show police in the southern US state of Louisiana shooting a man dead at point blank range.

The cellphone footage began circulating on social media just hours after 37-year-old Alton Sterling was pronounced dead outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, with four gunshot wounds to his chest and back.

Mr Sterling was known to sell CDs on the street outside the store.

In the video, police appear to be in the process of restraining Mr Sterling before one of them shouts that he has a gun. Four shots are then heard while witnesses begin screaming.

Police have not confirmed whether Mr Sterling had a gun or not, but have said the two officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.

The shooting has sparked outrage across the US, with the Twitter hastag #blacklivesmatter trending.
