Inmates have saved a police officer who was being choked by a prisoner.

The incident was captured on CCTV in Mahoning County Jail in Ohio.

Local news broadcaster WKBN reports a prisoner known as Lucky Mitchell attacked Deputy Anthony Lucas after the deputy returned from a disciplinary pod, where Mitchell had been placed for spitting on an officer.

Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene says Mitchell allegedly tried to use a t-shirt fashioned into a noose to choke the deputy.

The inmate and officer fought for several minutes before other inmates intervened to restrain Mitchell.

Greene says Mitchell could now be looking at an attempted murder charge.

Deputy Lucas is reportedly doing well, with only minor bumps and bruises.
