A taxi driver in the US city of Boston is being praised for his honesty after handing in US$187,000 (NZ$262,000) to police that a passenger had left in his car.

Raymond "Buzzy" MacCausland found the money in a bag left on the back seat by an unkempt passenger he assumed was homeless.

Turns out the unkempt man had just picked up his inheritance, but forgot about his bag of money upon exiting.

Police contacted the man who then picked up the cash form the station. He gave MacCausland a reward of NZ$140.

Boston's police commissioner has hailed MacCausland's behaviour as exemplary.
