Major quake hits South Atlantic

A 7.3 magnitude quake has hit the South Atlantic ocean, according to an earthquake monitoring centre.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences, or GFZ, reports that the quake struck at a depth of 10km in the South Georgia Island Region early on Friday (local time).

The epicentre is about 2414km east of the southern tip of Argentina, and 316km away from islands hosting a British Antarctic research station.

No immediate tsunami warning has been issued.
