Australian mauled to death by shark

Koumac

A West Australian man has died after being mauled by a shark off New Caledonia's main island.

The attack happened when the 50-year-old man from Fremantle fell off his kitesurfing board into water inside the reef, off the northern port of Koumac.

He died after suffering a deep bite to his thigh just before 4pm on Tuesday (local time).

The man had been on holiday for 10 days and was on a catamaran with a group of people who witnessed the attack.

Afterwards, he went into cardiac arrest. They tried to pull him to safety and administered first aid, which was ultimately unsuccessful.
