There are fears for a Kiwi man missing off the coast of France.

The alarm was raised after Rhys Cochrane didn't turn up to his shift on the yacht he was working on.

It's believed he went for a swim and didn't return.

Police have since called off the search for him.

In 2012, Mr Cochrane made headlines in New Zealand when he rescued an orca tangled in a crayfish pot line.

His parents are on their way to France.
